Health Benefits of Tennis: Why Play Tennis?

Who doesn’t want to start off their weekend with a game of tennis? As one of the world’s most popular sports, it is clear that there is something that draws people to the game. Not only is tennis an enjoyable experience, it is also a great source of exercise for people of all ages.  Here are some of the health benefits tennis has to offer to players:

(1) Maintaining or losing weight:
Tennis helps build aerobic fitness by burning fat and strengthening cardiovascular health. Higher energy levels in your daily life will be apparent when exercising and playing tennis frequently, allowing you to become more active both on and off the tennis court.

(2) Reducing the impact of illness:
Studies have shown that people who participate in tennis 3 hours a week over a period of time cut their risk of death in half from any cause, in addition, tennis also helps with bone strength and density to assist with osteoporosis for older players. Tennis players’ immune systems tend to be stronger because of the promotion of health and fitness that comes with consistent exercise.

(3) Enhanced mobility, flexibility and coordination:
Flexibility and balance are strengthened through movements toward the tennis ball to return to an opponent, with many changes of direction, dynamic balance is improved to help stabilize your body on the move.
Hand-eye coordination is constantly strengthening with the repetitive judgment of timing between the approaching ball and proper strike on the racquet.

(4) Boosted mood:
Tennis is one of the leading sports that develops positive personality characteristics in players. Due to the social aspect of the sport, tennis brings friends together for a game that can be played at a variety of different levels. In addition to a social experience, tennis improves overall health and increases energy levels that lead to uplifted self-esteem and a more positive mood.

Top 3 Highlights from the Allianz Championship

This year, Broken Sound Club's Old Course was host to the internationally televised Allianz Championship played annually by the top PGA Champions Tour professionals with proceeds benefitting the Boca Raton Regional Hospital. The event was held from February 3-9th and people from all over the world came to watch and play. We were excited to hear the news that Broken Sound Club would be host to the 2014 Allianz Championship.

After searching for locations in South Florida for over a year, we kept coming back to Broken Sound because the quality and challenge of the golf course had all the ingredients needed for a successful event,” Donna Fiedorowicz of the PGA Champions Tour. We would like to thank the Allianz and their sponsors for a wonderful event!

    1. Michael Allen wins Allianz Championship

Michael Allen won the Allianz Championship at Broken Sound Club's Old Course on Sunday, February 9th for his 6th Champions Tour title, beating Duffy Waldorf with a two-putt birdie on the second hole of a playoff.

After Allen holed out on the par-5 18th, Waldorf had a chance to extend the playoff, but missed an 8-foot birdie putt after finding the front bunker in two. Michael Allen tied the Champions Tour record with a 60 to take a three-shot lead after the first round of the Allianz in Boca Raton. Allen closed with a 3-under 69 to match Waldorf at 18-under 198 on The Old Course at Broken Sound.
     2. Junior Achievement Twitter Challenge
JAof South Florida challenged attendees of the 2014 Allianz Championship at Broken Sound Club's Old Course to join the #AllianzBirdies Twitter challenge to benefit the financial literacy programs of Junior Achievement of South Florida. Allianz will donate $1 for every tweet with the hashtag #AllianzBirdies, up to a total of $40,000. Broken Sound also enjoyed participating in this challenge the weekend of the Allianz Championship.

Thousands of tweets by golf fans and friends of Junior Achievement brought the first #AllianzBirdies Twitter Challenge to a close Feb. 9, raising $25,000 for Junior Achievement of South Florida. As the Championship came down to a playoff with the final two golfers, Allianz Life announced it would double the initial donation of $1 per tweet, promising $2 for every tweet with the hashtag mention! In total more than 12,000 tweets were sent as a result of the #AllianzBirdies Twitter Challenge.

     3. Private Clinic hosted by Annika Sorenstam
The 4th Annual Executive Women’s Day gave women of all skill sets a chance to play 9 holes with a PGA Champions Tour Player during the week of the Allianz Championship at Broken Sound Club's Old Course.

Players were encouraged to continue playing all championship holes! This fun-filled day included a private clinic hosted by Annika Sorenstam, lunch, and a fabulous gift package. This fun Women’s day was an experience like no other!

Broken Sound Country Club was happy to host the 2014 Allianz Championship.
